Dr. B.R. Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Mohali, marked World Blood Donor Day 2025 with a heartfelt tribute to the selfless act of voluntary blood donation, in line with this year’s global theme — “20 Years of Celebrating Giving.”
The event was graced by Dr. Sunita Bhagat, Joint Director, Blood Transfusion Services, PSACS, as the Guest of Honour. She emphasized the crucial role of blood banks in the public health system and the PSACS blood donation and transport van played a key role in facilitating blood collection from student donors during the camp.
Dr. Bhavneet Bharti, Director Principal of AIMS Mohali, led by example as she recounted her own journey as a blood donor, which began on her 18th birthday as a first-year medical student. Since then, she has donated blood more than 50 times, inspiring generations of students with her consistent commitment to saving lives. She also shared a personal tribute to her father, who had worked closely with Dr. J.G. Jolly, the founding figure of India’s voluntary blood donation movement.
A poignant highlight of the event was the address by Mrs. Vanita Sahni, who shared the remarkable life story of Padma awardee Mrs. Saroop Kishen, with whom she had the privilege of working closely. A trailblazer in India’s voluntary blood donation movement, Mrs. Kishen’s charismatic leadership, unwavering dedication, and compassionate service have left a lasting legacy. Her journey continues to inspire generations and stands as a beacon for community-driven healthcare.
A moving segment of the event featured Mrs. Sukrita Singh, a dedicated volunteer with the Blood Bank Society for over 30 years, addressed the students and debunked common myths surrounding blood donation. She highlighted how volunteerism and public awareness are essential to building a robust donor base.
Medical guidance was provided by Dr. Tanupriya, Assistant Professor, and Dr. Sanya, Medical Officer, who explained the donor screening process, eligibility criteria, and safety protocols. Their explanations reassured many first-time MBBS student donors, who came forward in large numbers.
Over 20 students successfully donated blood, and many others pledged to donate in future camps. Students with temporary deferrals due to anemia were counseled to invest in their health and nutrition so they can contribute in the future.
