Dr Amar Singh MP Shri Fatehgarh Sahib while speaking in Lok Sabha during discussion on drugs highlighted how being a border state with Pakistan had led to Punjab suffering from the cross border drug menace.  He requested the Union Home Minister to help Punjab financially fight the drug menace as it was a national security issue and the amount of money and manpower needed to fight drugs needed were simply beyond the reach of any state.

He also mentioned the failure of the NDPS Act to effectively deal with manufacturers and suppliers. He said the NDPS act was from 1985, doesn’t differentiate between user and drug suppliers. The Union Government should bring in new law to punish the sellers and manufacturers of drugs.

Lastly he requested that it was time to relook at the drug problem, take ideas from countries that had managed this menace effectively and focus on providing relief to users who usually take to drugs due to poverty, unemployment or social and family pressures.
