Department of Philosophy in association with IQAC, Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 11, Chandigarh organized a Panel Discussion on the theme “What is Worth Teaching? / ਪੜ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਯੋਗ ਕੀ ਹੈ ? : Challenges of Translation in Contemporary Times” at the college campus.
The Panel included Prof. Krishna Kumar, former Director, NCERT and currently Honorary Professor, Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh, Prof. Satvinderpal Kaur, Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh, Mr. Lallan Singh Baghel, Chairperson, Department of Philosophy, Panjab University, Chandigarh and other faculty members from Punjabi University, Patiala and Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Anita Kaushal extended a warm welcome to the resource persons and appreciated the initiative of the Department of Philosophy for organizing the discussion. She said that the first part of the title “What is Worth Teaching?” is a significant analytical text on education and curriculum inquiry, written by Professor Krishna Kumar. It has been popular for the past four decades among scholars from multiple disciplines across the globe and has been quoted in a number of research books and articles on education and beyond. The book is translated into Punjabi (Paraoun Yog Ki Hai?) by Professor Satvinderpal Kaur. The translated version is published by Saptrishi Publication.
Prof Krishna Kumar said that translation is the most significant initiative to strengthen any language in the global world. It is time that scholars across disciplines should take a serious note and translate the global work in the Indian regional languages. He appreciated and spoke at length about the challenges particularly which Prof. Satvinderpal Kaur came across in translating the work. He equated translation to “Punarjanm” “rebirth” of the text.
Prof. Satvinderpal said that deliberations are central for any good translation. She said that translation demands a deeper understanding of the culture and context about the original writing and its author.
On the occasion the students asked few questions to Prof. Krishna Kumar. The session was moderated by Dr. Ambuj Sharma, Head, Department of Philosophy and Vote of thanks was extended by Ms Sheereen Khan, student of BA III of the college.
